All calls are charged in whole minutes or part thereof and the cost of the call is rounded up to the next 1p.
A data charge starts as soon as the first packet of data is used. You are then allocated 1MB to use before the next charge occurs. If any data is used in a 24 hour period there is a minimum charge of 1p.
Text messages consist of 160 characters. Any text exceeding 160 characters may be charged as multiple messages. This is determined by the receiving network (especially if roaming or texting internationally) and unfortunately, we have no control over this.
Picture messages are limited to 300KB. Any pictures over this size may be split into multiple messages.
From 1st July 2015, Ofcom, the independent regulator for the UK communications industries, changed the way 08, 09 and 118 numbers are charged for all communication providers across the industry.
These changes are designed to make the cost of calls clearer, and they were communicated through a campaign called UK Calling.
Put simply, call charges for calls to 084, 087, 09 and 118 across the UK, will be made up of two parts: an access charge from 1pMobile (5p a minute) and a service charge from the organisation you are calling.
All these changes apply to calls made from every landline and mobile phone for every provider. Calls from payphones, international calls or calls to the UK when roaming overseas were not affected.
Numbers beginning 084 and 087 are general service numbers used for contacting organisations. Those beginning 09 are 'premium rate' service numbers. Numbers beginning 118 are directory enquiry numbers.
At 1pMobile we class any of these numbers that charge more than £1.50 a minute as a 'Premium Rate'. If you want to enable or block calls to these numbers please log into your account area and use the option on your account info page.
When calling these numbers using your 1pMobile service the cost of calling any of these numbers will be made up of two parts:
This is the part of the call 1pMobile charges you for, charged as pence a minute. The 1pMobile access charge is 5p a minute. This charge will only be applied to calls made to 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers.
This is the remainder of the call charge. The organisation you are calling decides the service charge and must communicate it. For example, if the service charge was 40p a minute, the organisation you are calling might say 'Calls cost 40p a minute, plus your phone companyís access charge'.
By adding together the access charge and the service charge, you'll know exactly what the call will cost you.
Hereís an example:
Our access charge is 5p a minute. Letís say the service charge for a particular number you want to call is 40p a minute. In that case, you would see information like this:
'Calls cost 40p a minute plus your phone company's access charge.'
In this particular example, the call would cost 40p a minute (the service charge), plus 5p a minute (the access charge). So the call would cost you 45p a minute. If the call lasted for 2 minutes, the charge for the call would be 90p.
Freephone numbers starting 0800, 0500 or 0808 are free to call from landlines and mobiles.
UK Calling is the name for the change that happened to make telephone charges clearer, and the information campaign that communicated these changes. The campaign was led by Ofcom, the communications regulator, and they worked together with all major phone companies.
Why were these changes made?
Research has found that there was often confusion about how much it costs to call service numbers. These changes made it easier for you to understand how much you will be charged for making these calls.
Is the overall cost of calls changing?
Freephone numbers which begin with 0800, 0500 and 0808 are free for customers to call from mobile phones.
For numbers starting 084, 087, 09 and 118, this system made the cost of calls clearer than previously. The organisation you are calling will communicate their service charge and 1pMobile will always publish our Access Charge (5p) on our website.
Where can I find out the access charge?
The 1pMobile access charge is 5p a minute and will be published on the website.
How will the organisation I am calling communicate the service charge?
Companies and organisations that provide services using 084, 087, 09 or 118 numbers will be required to communicate the charges clearly.
Wherever they advertise or promote one of these services, they must ensure that the service charge is displayed in a prominent position, and in close proximity to the telephone number.
